ARTISTS

  • Sona MacDonald

    Born in Vienna, Sona MacDonald received her training in London, Vienna and the USA.
    Engagements as an actress have taken her to the Freie Volksbühne Berlin, the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen im Schillertheater Berlin, the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, the Salzburg Festival and the Schauspielhaus Wien, among others. Sona MacDonald is a long-standing ensemble member of the Theater in der Josefstadt and has made guest appearances at the Burgtheater in Vienna. She has worked with directors such as Peter Zadek, Peter Stein, Steven Berkoff and Matthias Hartmann.

    Sona MacDonald has also been active in music time and again: she has not only appeared in numerous musicals, but has also toured Europe and the USA with musical evenings (e.g. "The Seven Deadly Sins - Kurt Weill Evening", "American Rhapsody", "Lost in Stars & Stripes").
    She also attracted great attention at home and abroad with the new recording of the "Dreigroschenoper" (BMG Records) with the Ensemble Modern under the direction of H. K. Gruber. In it, Sona MacDonald sings Polly with Max Raabe as Macky Messer.

    In addition to her extensive stage work, Sona MacDonald can also be seen in numerous television productions. She is the winner of the O. E. Hasses Prize, the Kurt Meisel Prize and the Nestroy Prize (2009 as Best Supporting Actress & 2016 as Best Actress).

    In "Spatz und Engel" at the Vienna Burgtheater, Sona MacDonald shone together with Maria Happel in the roles of Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf.
    In 2015, she appeared at the Salzburg Festival as Jenny in the "Dreigroschenoper", played Fräulein Julie at the Theater in der Josefstadt, in "Blue Moon - eine Hommage an Billie Holiday", the "Lenya Story - Ein Liebeslied", in the Kirschgarten, "Engel der Dämmerung. Marlene Dietrich" and in "Rechnitz" (A strangling angel).
